Moody Gardens provides the ideal breathtaking island setting for the event surrounded by 242 acres of lush gardens, accommodations, dining, and activities.

This retreat weekend is an opportunity for you to do something your body will thank you for … and your mind will be pretty happy too!

It has become a fall tradition at Moody Gardens and this year’s retreat will balance a learning compo-nent for understanding and appreciating your practice more deeply with manageable, refreshing, and insightful yoga practice.

Each session has a focus on an area of the body, and will start with some insights into how that area of the body works, some of the challenges we commonly face in that area, and how to gear your practice toward improvement in that area.

Then we get into practice, putting these ideas to work for us. There will even be brief, illustrated notes provided to help you remember what you felt and learned!

Friday Evening: Basic Back Health

The most fundamental thing we do to maintain the health of our low back is the simple twisting action of walking — and yet we lose that movement over time, and our back suffers for it!

Twisting is simple and fundamental for our health, but many of us shy away from it in yoga, thinking it’s about deep spinal twists! It’s really about keeping the core muscles that support our low back free and fluid.

Yoga poses reinforce these simple, natural movements, and we’ll put this understanding to work in the practice. And after practice, you’ll discover a new spring in your step and freedom in your breath!

Saturday Morning: Freedom in Your Shoulders

Our shoulders have three moving parts — collarbone, shoulder blade, and armbone. For healthy, pain-free movement of the shoulders, these need to move together well. But all too often, they don’t, and our shoulder and neck muscles suffer for it!

We’ll explore these movement and how to get them in sync, releasing muscle tension and expanding their range of motion. You’ll be surprised at how much better your shoulders and neck feel when you don’t force your shoulders, but instead go with the flow of the joints!

The practice will explore fundamental yoga asanas and the sequences that link them together. It’s not about extreme movements or stretches, but about movements that find freedom. You’ll discover plenty of ‘light bulb ’moments for working better with your shoulders in yoga poses — and in life.

Saturday Afternoon: Movement and Breath

Our movement, in both body and breath, starts with the sacrum. Its movement is simple, but we too often skip over it and cause stress and tightness in our back, hips, and knees as we bend forward and back, in yoga and in life.

The key to connecting back to the root of this natural movement is the breath. This session will center around simple, flowing movement that both frees the sacrum via the breath, and frees the breath via the sacrum.

We’ll explore simple self-adjustments for when your sacroiliac joint gives you trouble, and we’ll transi-tion into breathing and relaxation practices by which you can calm and steady your nervous system and promote greater resilience in your daily life.

Sunday Morning: Your Feet are the Keys to your Knees and Hip

So much of the health of our knees and hips depends on how we use our feet, that it’s a wonder we don’t spend more time on them. Yoga practice gives a unique opportunity to put together simple, healthy actions for the feet together with healthy actions for the knees and hips.

This practice will start with simple practices for the health of your feet that will blossom into a refresh-ing vinyasa (steady, connected flow of postures) that supports the stability and wellness of your knees and hips.

You’ll be surprised at how you find greater freedom of movement in your hips when you start with your feet, and how much better your knees work! We’ll explore stretches that are helpful for reducing sciatic pain, and round off the practice with a deep relaxation at the end!
