Galveston – The area youth will have more opportunities to get connected to the environment they live in. Moody Gardens will soon offer Venture Crew, the Galveston nonprofit organization's local initiative chartered by the Boy Scouts of America to promote education and awareness about the environment through variety of conservation activities.
“Education and conservation is a key part of the Moody Gardens mission, and this is a new approach to helping young people learn about the world we live in,” said Moody Gardens Volunteer Coordinator Maria Miller. “The Venturers can decide what they want to get out of it, and we are here to provide guidance that they need to achieve their goals.”
Through the Venturing program at Moody Gardens, the youth will learn how natural environments function and how human beings can manage their behavior and ecosystems in order to live sustainably. Participants are able to focus on the conservation topics of their own interests, including coastal restoration, rain forest conservation and protection of living inhabitants such as birds and coral reefs. There are also opportunities to attend Venturing camps and trips. The members will have the support by trained Moody Gardens advisors and consultants, who are knowledgeable in environmental leadership.
Designed for men and women between the ages of 14 and 21, Venturing is a national program chartered by the Boy Scouts of America. Each chapter or Venture Crew focuses on a special interest of choice such as computer science, medicine, engineering or conservation, and is sponsored by community organizations such as local schools, churches, businesses and government.
Interested teens and young adults are invited to attend the Moody Gardens Venture Crew Open House from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., Monday, Dec. 7. For more information about the program and the open house, please contact 409-683-4108 or visit www.moodygardens.org.
